Restoring a Community Lake Through Proactive Sediment Management
Following years of sediment accumulation and increasing algae pressure, Page Lake adopted a proactive management strategy that evolved into one of the largest SchlixX PlusĀ® applications undertaken by Oase.

Project Overview
For decades, Page Lake has been at the centre of community life.
Residents fish, boat, swim and spend time on the water throughout the year. Like many lakes across North America, however, Page Lake was experiencing the gradual effects of ageing. Organic matter and sediment had accumulated over time, creating conditions that increasingly favoured algae growth and declining water quality.
Faced with rising treatment requirements and the prospect of continued reactive management, the Lake Association began exploring a more sustainable long-term approach.
Working alongside Oase Water Technology and SOLitude Lake Management, Page Lake implemented a phased SchlixX Plus programme designed to address the source of the problem rather than simply the symptoms.
What began as an initial application ultimately led to one of the largest SchlixX Plus projects undertaken to date.
The Challenge
While Page Lake remained a valued recreational resource, years of organic sediment accumulation were beginning to impact the system.
As nutrients built up within the sediment layer, algae pressure increased and reactive management became increasingly necessary.
According to Oase Water Technology, this challenge is not unique to Page Lake.
"Over time these lakes are aging and they're accumulating organics and sediment. Some faster than others, but eventually you reach a tipping point where reactive management strategies are no longer efficient or effective." - Dave Riedl, Oase Water Technology.
The Lake Association recognised that continually treating symptoms was unlikely to provide a long-term solution.
Looking Beyond Reactive Management
Traditionally, many water bodies are managed by responding to visible issues such as algae blooms.
However, the team at Page Lake wanted to understand why those issues were occurring in the first place.
"The reactive approach is to treat the symptoms. In the long run, the more you can prevent an issue from occurring, the less money you have to spend over time."
Rather than focusing solely on what was visible at the surface, the strategy shifted toward addressing the nutrient-rich organic sediment accumulating on the lake bed.
The First Application
The Lake Association elected to trial SchlixX Plus as part of a broader effort to improve long-term lake health.
"Our job is to maintain this water and make sure that it's free of bacteria and algae and we decided to give this a shot and see how it works." - Randy DeAngelo, President Lake Association
The objective was straightforward:
Reduce accumulated organic material, improve water quality, and create a more stable aquatic environment.
Working alongside SOLitude Lake Management, the initial application was completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to residents.
"So far day one here at Page Lake, it's going great. We're ahead of schedule. Being able to use the bag and treat right out of the bag speeds up time immensely. On a project of this scale, it makes a big difference." - Jeremy Parkhurst, SOLitude Lake Management
Visible Results
The results quickly became noticeable to residents.
"Organic material just seems to disappear. Clarity of the water's increased. I still think it's magic." - Randy DeAngelo
Improved water clarity and reduced sediment accumulation helped reinforce confidence in the approach, creating momentum for a larger restoration programme.
For the Lake Association, the improvements weren't measured solely in technical data. They were visible in the way residents experienced and enjoyed the lake.
Scaling the project
Following the success of the initial application, the decision was made to expand the programme significantly.
For Oase, the project became an important demonstration of what proactive lake management can achieve at scale.
"This is a very significant project because the first year was so successful that they decided to have us back at a significantly larger application." - Dave Riedl, Oase
The second phase involved applying SchlixX Plus at a restorative rate designed to address decades of accumulated organic material before transitioning to a lower long-term maintenance strategy.
The approach focuses on restoring stability first, then maintaining it through proactive annual management.
A New Approach to Lake Management
According to SOLitude Lake Management, the industry is increasingly moving away from purely reactive treatment programmes.
"I think proactive management is definitely going to be a continuing wave in the future." - Jeremy Parkhurst
As lake communities become more informed about nutrient cycling, sediment accumulation and long-term water quality trends, there is growing recognition that addressing the root causes of decline can be more effective than repeatedly treating symptoms.
Instead of simply responding to algae growth, proactive strategies focus on creating conditions that make recurring problems less likely to develop.
Protecting the Future of Page Lake
For residents, the project is ultimately about preserving something much bigger than water quality.
"You grew up on this lake. Your kids are coming to this lake. Let's make sure it's there for them and it's healthy fifty to a hundred years from now." - Randy DeAngelo
That long-term perspective continues to guide the Lake Association's approach.
By combining community leadership, proactive management and strong partnership between Oase Water Technology and SOLitude Lake Management, Page Lake is demonstrating how lake restoration can move beyond short-term fixes and towards sustainable stewardship.
