Show Fountain, Banpo Bridge, Seoul
A bridge built for transport became a destination in its own right. Stretching 1,140 metres along the Banpo Bridge, the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain transformed an everyday river crossing into one of Seoul's most iconic attractions, reconnecting the city with the Han River through water, light and movement.
The challenge
Transforming infrastructure into a landmark
Banpo Bridge is one of Seoul's busiest crossings, carrying thousands of vehicles across the Han River every day. While it played an essential role in the city's transport network, the bridge itself offered little reason for people to stop, gather or engage with the surrounding waterfront.
As part of the wider revitalisation of the Han River, the ambition was to create more than a crossing. The bridge needed to become a visual and emotional connection between two new riverside parks, encouraging residents and visitors to experience the waterfront in a completely new way.
The challenge was to create a spectacular fountain system spanning the full length of the bridge while operating entirely from the river below.
A world-record bridge fountain
Oase developed a continuous fountain installation extending 1,140 metres along both sides of the bridge, creating the world's longest bridge fountain.
Using 380 individually controlled nozzles powered by 38 high-performance pumps, the system produces flowing curtains of water and dynamic rainbow-coloured displays that transform the structure throughout the day and night.
Rather than relying on treated water, the installation draws directly from the Han River before returning it, creating a particularly environmentally responsible solution while allowing the fountain to operate at an impressive scale.
Delivering the project
Engineering at an unprecedented scale
Designing a fountain across an active bridge presented significant engineering challenges.
To create smooth, dynamic water movements, Oase developed an entirely new proportional multi-way swivel valve capable of precisely controlling both the direction and height of each water jet while operating under continuous use.
A dedicated control and communication system was also developed to coordinate every pump, nozzle and lighting sequence across the full length of the installation, ensuring reliable performance and seamless choreography
The results
A new symbol for Seoul
Today, the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is recognised as one of Seoul's most visited public attractions.
The bridge no longer serves only as infrastructure. It has become a destination where residents and visitors gather to experience choreographed water performances against the backdrop of the Han River, particularly during the evening light shows.
Connecting more than two riverbanks
The project fulfilled the wider ambition of the Han River revitalisation programme by strengthening the connection between the surrounding parks and creating a shared public space centred on water.
Its success was recognised with a Guinness World Record as the world's longest bridge fountain, reinforcing Banpo Bridge's position as an internationally recognised landmark
